Car dealer video marketing: what actually works on social
Video is the strongest format a dealer has — but only when each film is built for the job it's doing. Here's how to think about social cuts, listing films and the standards that turn views into enquiries.
Two films, two jobs
A short social cut (under 30 seconds, vertical) has one job: stop the scroll. Open on the complete car in the first second, keep the rhythm tight, and end with a reason to click through.
A listing film (45–90 seconds, landscape or vertical) has a different job: answer questions. Exterior, cabin, controls, details — the same sequence a buyer would walk on the forecourt. This is the film that turns a browser into an enquiry.
Don't make one film do both jobs. A 90-second walkaround dies on social; a 15-second tease leaves listing viewers with unanswered questions.
What the platforms reward
Vertical first. TikTok, Reels and Shorts are phone screens — film and edit for 9:16, then reframe for landscape placements.
Sound-off clarity. Most social video starts muted. On-screen text has to carry the story on its own; music is a bonus, not the message.
Early retention matters more than total views. A film that holds viewers for three seconds earns distribution; one that loses them in one second doesn't, however pretty it is.
Honesty converts better than gloss
Show the real car. Buyers who enquire from an honest film arrive expecting what they saw; buyers sold a fantasy leave at the viewing.
Label enhanced or generated scenes. It's fast becoming an expectation, and it distinguishes dealers who show their stock from dealers who hide it.
Music rights matter. A trending track in a personal post is not cleared for a dealer's commercial advert — use properly licensed or original music, or post the music-free version.
