Auto Trader photo tips: getting more enquiries from your listing

On a marketplace, your photos are your pitch. These are the practical habits that turn search-results impressions into enquiries — and the common mistakes that suppress them.

Your first photo does the heavy lifting

The lead image appears in search results next to every competitor. Make it a clean front three-quarter of the complete car, in good light, with nothing distracting behind it. That one photo decides whether a buyer ever sees the other nineteen.

Avoid dark forecourts, tight crops and other cars in frame. The buyer is choosing between twenty similar cars in a list — give them a reason to choose yours.

Order the set like a viewing

After the lead shot, walk the buyer around: exterior angles first, then cabin, then controls, then details and documents. It mirrors how someone inspects a car in person, and it keeps them scrolling.

Put condition close-ups near the end, after the buyer is already interested. Honest, but sequenced.

Mistakes that quietly cost enquiries

Fewer than 15 photos. Thin sets read as something to hide.

Mixed orientation and lighting. A consistent set looks cared-for; a random one looks rushed.

Edited or filtered images that shift the colour. Buyers spot it at the viewing and trust evaporates.

No interior shots. Cabin condition is the first thing most buyers ask about.

Stock or library images. Buyers recognise them instantly and scroll past.
