Car dealer marketing on a budget: where photos and video pay back
Independent dealers don't need big ad budgets to market well. The highest-return spend is better presentation of the stock you already own — here's the order that pays back fastest.
Spend on presentation before promotion
Paid ads amplify whatever they point at. If the listing photos are weak, you're paying to show more people a weak listing. Fix the presentation first — it's a one-off cost per car that works on every channel at once: Auto Trader, your website, social and WhatsApp enquiries.
A complete 20-shot photo set and one short film per car is the baseline buyers now expect. Anything less quietly suppresses enquiries, no matter how good the car is.
The order that pays back
1. Listing photos. Every car, every time. This is where enquiries are won or lost.
2. A short vertical social cut per car. One film, posted to the platforms your buyers actually use, costs little and compounds — your page becomes a showroom people follow.
3. A longer listing film for higher-value stock. On cars where the margin justifies it, a 60–90 second walkaround pre-answers the questions that otherwise cost you phone time.
4. Only then, paid promotion — pointed at listings that already convert.
Keep it consistent and honest
A recognisable, consistent style across every listing is free branding. Buyers scrolling a marketplace learn to spot your cars before they spot your name.
Honest presentation is cheaper too: fewer wasted viewings, fewer collapsed deals, fewer awkward conversations about the scratch that wasn't in the photos.
